The Washington Young Lawyers Committee’s Annual Open Sections Night on Jan. 21 is one personal commitment you can keep.
With the new year comes celebration and resolution. This year, I will celebrate a few notable events, like the time I started my computer and Adobe didn’t need an update, or how I once correctly inserted a USB on the first try. I also have a few New Year’s resolutions. In 2016, I will strive to: (a) do less laundry and wear more deodorant; and (2) be consistent.
If you have yet to make a New Year’s resolution, then I have an excellent proposal: get involved with a WSBA Section! It just so happens that the Washington Young Lawyer Committee’s annual Open Sections Night and After-Party is Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, at the WSBA Conference Center in Seattle.

The WSBA has 28 sections, each of which is constituted around a particular practice area or humanitarian cause. There is, for example, a Litigation Section, a Creditor/Debtor Rights Section, a World Peace Through Law Section, a Solo Small Practice Section, and a Health Law Section, to name just a handful. Open Sections Night presents a chance to meet with section leadership and members, ask questions, and acquire helpful information. It’s also a chance to network with young lawyers, meet experienced lawyers who may specialize in your practice area, and win prizes! If that isn’t enough incentive, beverages, including beer and wine, will be provided.*
Want to keep celebrating? An after-party will also take place at the Yard House. This event includes some free food and will offer many exciting opportunities to make bad holiday-party decisions.
The practice of law can be more than just a profession. It can be a satisfying, lifelong pursuit to make your community a better, more just, and fairer place. Being involved in your legal community, including joining a WSBA Section, is one step you can take toward reaching that ideal. Plus, free food and drinks! (Come on, you weren’t going to make a resolution to lose weight, anyway.)
